Mexican Popular Art
Gourd lined with beads. You know that they are?
According to the Huichol, particularly the women who know how to make ritual gourds, “the chaquira means life.” These small colored beads are also compared to corn seeds, and are the object of ritual uses, which can be purification. In the community of Tuapuri, Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitán, for example, offerings, particularly candles (katirate), are symbolically washed with soap and bead necklaces, which are used as if they were a sponge. In this case, the beads are associated with drops of water, a symbolism that refers us to the pre-Hispanic chalchihuites Mexican Popular Art.
